In deepest south Manchester lies an old farm labourer's cottage or it did. The food is decent traditional pub grub. This is one pub which seems to be forever busy – on weekend nights when the students are around you can't move in the place. The tiny front room vault is the only reminder of earlier times. There's a quiz on Monday night and pleasant seating around the bowling green which ensures even more people on summer's days.

Renamed as Fuel, (previously Kaleida and 60/40), this is one of south Manchester's favourite hangouts. Fuel dishes up lip-smacking veggie feasts – hot paninis, bruschettas and other sweet and savoury nibbles, has a range fruit/herbal teas and an aromatic array of world coffee beans. There are also bottled beers and wines to sup whilst perusing the daily papers. Upstairs is available for private parties and Fuel also provides internet access.

Since bursting through to next door and simultaneously getting rid of its highly popular Friday jazz jams in the cellar, Solomon isn't quite as atmospheric as it used to be. However, the splash coloured walls remains the same, as does the charming rustic makeshift furniture and homely brick fireplace in the centre. There is also a fine selection of sarnies and mains, with the all day breakfasts (meaty or veggie).

Pleasure Bar is a regular venue for Funkademia and the sounds of Northern Funk. The decor and goldfish bowl windows provide a setting for the trendiest bar in Withington. A large selection of cocktails, wines and beers are offered alongside snacks and coffees. The terrace proves to be a pleasant suntrap for outdoor drinking. Well worth a visit or two.
